When a superhero dies, stay dead, I say. When a WWE wrestler retires, hang up that belt for good, I say. No more comeback matches. When a smoker says they are going to quit, you darn tootin’ better put the tobacco away. Don’t you dare substitute cigarillos for your smokes and say “I’m slowly breaking the cycle.” Just quit. Call me one of those, “I’ll believe it when I see it” types of people. Say you’re gonna do something…well… The same goes for you Mr. Quentin Tarantino. This week at the Adobe Max Creativity Conference in San Francisco, QT once again reinforced the notion that he’s going to make two more feature films, and then he’s out. Period. On his terms. Oh yeah, here’s his exact words:
“Drop the mic. Boom. Tell everybody, ‘Match that sh-t!”
“At the end of the day, if you’re going to get right down to it … the way I define success is when I’m finished with the career, and I’m considered one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived…That would be successful. And going further, a great artist, not just filmmaker.”
Yup.he’s that sure of himself. He’s gonna take his ball and go home. And why not? He’s pretty pleased with his body of work. 8 films so far in roughly 25 years is pretty good. He’s not churning out flicks like Stephen King pumps out horror novels, but he’s ready to go out on a high note on his terms. Hopefully, we never see the day QT has to make commercials to make ends meet. That’ll be a sad day indeed. Yet, he sees an end. Will it be the end? Maybe. Here’s the Adobe Max video of QT being QT. (Might be some colourful language. Be advised, this may be NSFW)
Before he goes the way of Florida sunsets and nipple high, white pants, here are some things I’d like to see him tackle:
1. A Star Trek movie/TV show. Forget the idea of QT directing a Star Wars movie. I’ve often believed an underused Star Trek story line is “Section 31”. Spies, criminals and questionable morals in the squeaky clean universe of Gene Roddenberry is something that intrigues me. I feel QT could do justice to this story and perhaps show us that the Star Trek universe was not just built on good intentions.
2. Kill Bill Part 3. Nuff Said. Vengeance over a generation. The Bride in her retirement years. Maybe she trained the one who is bound to destroy her. Her own daughter jumps in to this conflict. This could be the swan song we have been waiting for.
3. A film noir, horror movie. Think about it. A 1930s crime drama with a bit of something out of the ordinary. Maybe not supernatural, but maybe something that adds to the suspense of this genre, but a little more along the lines of a 70s or 80s horror movie. Maybe. That would be a mashup and a half!
Anyway, that’s my thoughts. Again, QT, I’ll believe it when I see it. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below. See you!
