Going on the better side of a little while now, Kevin Smith has been tickled pink to be attached to reboot the beloved action/scifi/rock-n-rolla property Buckaroo Bonzai. I for one, was stoked to learn he was going to relaunch a new TV series based on the movie, and to hear that he had already plotted out about two seasons worth of ideas was the icing on the cake. Alas, it looks like it’s no longer a done deal as good old Kevin bowed out of the production this week. Not to worry though, he has reasons. Good reasons.
What happened, you asked? Well, it looks like MGM, the studio backing Kev, decided to sue the original writer and film maker of Buckaroo Bonzai so that they could secure the rights for Kevin and move forward with production.
This was news to Kevin, who hit the brakes and did the right thing. He promptly took to the FB’s and had this to say:
“My point is that I’m not going to court. I love the people at MGM. They’ve treated me insanely well all across this project with real credibility and stuff like that, like they thought I could do this show, even when I didn’t think I could. And the folks at Amazon have been lovely as well, but you gotta remember, there’s no production yet, no script has been turned in, I haven’t been paid a dime, no money has been really spent.
So, it’s not like we’re going to upend a lot of things, like this legal thing came out of nowhere. I did not know about this. I called up my agent and was like, ‘What the f–k is this?’…. I’m no longer involved. I don’t wish anybody harm; I wish all parties well. I hope these dudes come to an agreement, and if they do and they still want me involved down the road, I’ll be here. But why would they?”
Looks like there are still good people in the world! “Adventure? Excitement? A Jedi craves not these things!”
