Gord Downie honoured at Assembly of First Nations

In an Assembly of First Nations meeting in Gatineau, Que., on December 6th, Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip was honoured and given his Lakota spirit name: “He who walks with the stars.” Downie became a brother as he continues his personal quest to do his part for Canadian reconciliation.

At the ceremony he was wrapped in an eight-point star blanket and given many gifts, including an eagle feather — an honoured gift from the Creator — artwork and a pair of moccasins.

Recently, Downie has brought the story of 12-year-old Chanie Wenjack into the hearts and minds of Canadians with his “Secret Path” project.  Wenjack died tragically of exposure as he tried to walk home from his residential school to his home in Northern Ontario.
