Female-led “Star Wars: Forces of Destiny” Announced

A new micro-series, new toys, and new merch heralds “Star Wars: Forces of Destiny” – a line of products targeting girls by fusing the entire “Star Wars” canon with a Disney Princess aesthetic. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, announced the series today and a special preview is scheduled for Star Wars Celebration Orlando during the “Heroines of Star Wars” panel.

According to starwars.com, Kennedy said, “Star Wars Forces of Destiny is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity”. Original actors are set to reprise their roles in YouTube shorts which, “capture the small moments and everyday decisions that shape who these characters are”.

The first phase seems to be 2-3 minute animated shorts that will be released on the Disney YouTube channel in July followed by a two-part Disney Channel TV special in the fall. The shorts feature characters from across the Star Wars continuity from Padme Amidala in the prequel era to Rey in present Force Awakens-era. Ahsoka Tano, Jyn Erso, Princess Leia, and Sabine Wren are also featured.

Hasbro will release “Adventure Figures” – a fusion of dolls and action figures to support the release. Dynamic action (winging lightsabers, telescoping staves, etc.), multiple articulation points, and representation of supporting cast make a wide variety of options. Behold:
